WASPS

Some species of wasps make paper nests, other referred to as solitary wasps or mud daubers. These either build nests of mud or nest in a single hole in the ground.  European wasps often build a paper nest in the ground.

Wasps can vary considerably in size and colour.  Some are bright yellow, others yellow and black, others black with a metallic blue sheen.

These aggressive wasps attack when disturbed.

SOLITARY WASPS:

These wasps are quite docile.  While the name solitary wasp seems to indicate they are loners they are often found in numbers around garden beds, etc. They are usually all black with a metallic dark blue sheen and they are solitary in that the female nests in a single hole in the ground.  The male circles around above the area seldom landing.

EUROPEAN WASPS:

These wasps are extremely aggressive and will continue to attack.  European wasps are stocky black and yellow wasps that are about the size of a honey-bee. The nests are generally found in the ground and are started in holes such as animal burrows, etc.

The location of the nest can be located by observing the stream of fast-flying wasps entering and leaving a hole in the ground. Aerial nests are generally located in sheltered locations such as inside tree hollows or roof or wall cavities.
