How To Get Rid Of Cockroaches Hamilton

The summer months in Brisbane are the peak time to get rid of cockroaches in homes across the area. These pests are well known for infesting homes, causing an unsightly mess and potential health issues.

These pests are not only unhygienic but can cause an issue for people who suffer from asthma, so it’s important to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Recently we completed a cockroach control service at a home in Hamilton, Brisbane, where the homeowner was faced with a high number of active cockroaches. We discovered cockroaches inside the house and the outside yard areas. These pests had established themselves well over time. But, we knew what to do.

Where do cockroaches nest in your house?

Cockroaches can be found all around the home, inside and out. They access a home through cracks and crevices, under doors and roofs. They are also found behind electrical equipment including dishwashers, washing machines and inside air conditioner units.

Once inside, cockroaches are typically found wet areas including kitchens, bathrooms, internal laundries are active during the night.

Cockroaches in kitchens are an issue as they can access stored food, garbage’s and cause health issues.

How much does it cost to get rid of cockroaches?

Cockroach control products available from Bunnings or the supermarket are generally not effective as they do not contain the full strength pesticides to keep these pests at bay. They can also be expensive to buy.

A general pest control service to remove cockroaches, ants and spiders is usual around $145.00 for a service that takes 1 hour to complete. The prices for pest control in Brisbane show our options for cockroach control and other pests.

This is a thorough service that will locate the source of the cockroaches, where they’re coming from, and create a barrier in and around your home. This will protect your home from these pests for at least 12 months.

What is the best home remedy to get rid of roaches?

We often get asked this question. Below are our top tips to help reduce and keep cockroaches away:

  • Tie garbage bags before throwing them in the council bin.
  • Keep the bin as clean as possible by washing regularly.
  • Don’t leave uneaten pet food in bowls outside.
  • Keep kitchen areas clean and free of food waste.
  • Ensure any leaking internal taps are repaired.
  • Tell the kids not to leave food waste in their rooms (we feel your pain!).

What do professionals use to kill roaches?

We are fully trained and educated about cockroaches and how they live. We use professionally made pesticides that are designed to directly target the biology of a cockroach on mass.

These pests are known to survive cockroach spray, even radioactive exposure better than humans to a degree.

Any chemical product is carefully applied around homes to not affect people and pets. We can also provide environmentally friendly alternatives where suitable in conjunction with good housekeeping practices.

How Do You Complete A Cockroach Control Service?

Upon arrival at a home or business, the first thing we do is fully inspect the property area to locate the harborage, source of the cockroach problem. If you have a pet, your technician will advise you to move the pet indoors or away from the yard area while conducting the treatment.

This allows us time to ensure we directly locate the pests and establish the size of the problem and what cockroach control methods are required.

We then apply treatment to the affected areas externally and internally, usually bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, garages and other areas as noted.

Upon completion of the treatment, your technician will advise you on how long you should wait to open windows and return your pet to the yard area. Any additional advice will also be provided to help ensure the treatment is fully effective.

Types of Cockroaches

There are approximately 3,500 species of cockroaches with five to six typically found in homes and businesses. Cockroaches will feed on most types of food products and will seek out the smallest amount of available food.

We typically treat the following three (3) types of cockroaches across the Brisbane area:

German Cockroach:

Appearance and Characteristics:

Adults:

  • Approx. 12-16mm in length.

  • Pale brown with two longitudinal streaks on the pronotum.

  • Have wings but rarely fly.

  • Chewing mouthparts.

  • Nocturnal but may be seen during daytime if the population is large.

  • High reproductive potential because of their speed of life cycle and number of young in
    comparison to other species.

  • This presents an increased tendency for this species to become resistant to the chemical through
    ‘selection’.

  • Very active.

Nymph (young):

  • Look similar to adult but wingless.

  • Darker brown, nearly black in colour.

  • A single light strip down the middle of the back is normally prominent.

Life Cycle:

  • Gradual / Incomplete metamorphosis (egg ¡V nymph ¡V adult). Eggs are encased in an egg capsule
  • (Ootheca). The female carries the egg capsule (Ootheca) until eggs are ready to hatch. Eggs per capsule: 30-48.
  • Incubation period (24„aC): 28 days (avg). Nymphal period (24 C): 40-125 days. Nymphs normally moult 7 times to reach adulthood. Females may produce 4-8 egg capsules in a lifetime. Adult lifespan: up to 1 year.

These cockroaches can adapt well to the environment which makes them difficult to control. Instead, we focus on cockroach control products on the harborage areas (where they live).

Australian Cockroach:

Appearance and Characteristics:

Adults:

  • Approx. 30-35mm in length.
  • The yellow border on the pronotum (area behind the head) is very distinct.
  • Dark Reddish-brown in colour.
  • Light markings on the thorax.
  • Yellow streaks on the sides at the base of the wing covers (elytra).
  • Wings completely cover the abdomen.
  • Chewing mouthparts.
  • Nocturnal.
  • Will fly in warm weather.

Nymph (young):

  • Look similar to adult but wingless.
  • Brown in colour until later instars (moults) which become more like the adult colouring.
  • Later instars possess distinct bright yellow spots along the margins of their abdomen.

Life Cycle:

  • Gradual / Incomplete metamorphosis (egg – nymph – adult). Eggs are encased in an egg capsule
  • (Ootheca). Female drops the egg capsule (Ootheca) shortly after it is formed near a food source, in crevices, on walls, or under workable material such as moist wood, so as to camouflage it. Eggs per capsule: 16-24. Incubation period: 30-40 days. Nymphal period: 6-12 months Nymphs normally moult
  • 10-12 times to reach adulthood. Females may produce 12-30 egg capsules in a lifetime. Egg capsules are completed and dropped at about 10-day intervals. Adult lifespan: up to 8 months.

Australian cockroaches adapt well to their environment which can make them difficult to control. As a result, we focus cockroach control products on the harborage areas (where they live).

American Cockroach:

Appearance and Characteristics:

Adults:

  • One of the largest of the cockroach species.
  • Approx. 35-40mm in length.
  • Reddish-brown in colour.
  • Light markings on the thorax.
  • The pale yellow border on pronotum.
  • Wings completely cover the abdomen.
  • Chewing mouthparts.

Nymph (young):

  • Look similar to adult but wingless.
  • Greyish-brown in colour until later instars (moults) which become more like the adult colouring.

Life Cycle:

  • Gradual / Incomplete metamorphosis (egg – nymph – adult). Eggs are encased in an egg capsule (Ootheca). Female carries the egg capsule (Ootheca) up to 4 days then deposits the capsule near a food source, in crevices, on walls, or under workable material such as moist wood, so as to camouflage it.
  • Eggs per capsule: 12-16 (in two rows). Incubation period: 38-55 days. Nymphal period: 160-971 days, 400 days (avg). nymphs normally moult 7-13 times to reach adulthood. Females may produce 6-90 egg capsules in a lifetime. Adult lifespan: up to 2 years.

American cockroaches are well known to be adaptable to their environment which can make them difficult to control. We then focus our cockroach control products on the harborage areas (where they live).
