Drain Flies (Moth Flies)

DESCRIPTION

Moth or drain flies are usually 2mm to 4mm in length, with hairy leaf shaped wings held roof-like over the body when at rest.  They are usually grey in colour.  The adults are poor fliers and are found in large numbers on walls or flying weakly near breeding sites.

Moth flies ( Psychoda sp.), also known as drain, sewage or filth flies, are considered household pests.

LIFE CYCLE

The female lays 20 – 100 eggs in suitable breeding material, the eggs hatch in approximately 48 hours and the larvae develop in 9 – 15 days.  The pupal stage lasts about 1 ½ days.  The whole life cycle lasts 2 to 4 weeks depending on conditions.

HABITAT

The eggs are laid in organic slime that accumulates in around drains, dirty garbage containers, damp sub-floors areas, etc.  They are often noticed around bathrooms and toilets.
