Coastal Brown Ant

Pheidole megacephala

You could find these ants nesting in lawns, gardens, pavers, under objects, the base of buildings, inside wall cavities and pot plants.

  • The nests are often surrounded by piles of dirt.
  • Also known as Big Headed Ant
  • They are sometimes confused with termites because they also build tubes.
  • The ants with the big heads are not female reproductives but part of a soldier cast.
  • Inside they eject ‘frass’ from their nests in piles (heads and body parts of workers).
