Case Making Clothes Moth

DESCRIPTION

The Case making clothes moth are small moths about 10mm long and are silvery buff in colour. The larvae that cause damage to materials of animal origin are easily recognisable by the characteristic case-like cocoon it carries with it and in which pupation takes place.  The pupal cocoon is made from fibres on which the larvae has been feeding and can take on the colour of this material.

LIFE CYCLE / HABITAT

The female moth lays her eggs on or in material that will sustain the larvae development. Wool fibres, as in clothes, as well as woollen carpet, felts, furs, all materials of animal origin can be damaged.

The larvae attack these materials causing serious damage and then before pupating crawl up walls to ceilings, picture rails and ledges, as well as under and on top of furniture.  The eggs hatch in 5 – 10 days, the larvae feed for 2 – 6 months, the pupal phase takes 8 – 12 days, the adult moth lives for 14 days.

The larvae feed in quite, undisturbed areas under furniture.  They are often found along the edge of rugs, near baseboards, or on the lower edges of walls, etc.
