Bed Bugs

DESCRIPTION

Adult bed bugs are small 4 -5 mm long red brown in colour, wingless oval shaped with a flattened body.  They have piercing, sucking mouthparts.  Nymphs resemble adults in their appearance after hatching from the egg.

LIFE CYCLE / HABITAT

Females must have a blood meal before egg laying can take place.  Eggs are cemented on a surface in batches of 10 or more.

Sites chosen for egg laying are cracks and crevices in furniture, walls, skirtings, etc., close to the host’s sleeping area.  They can be found in seams of mattresses, bed frames and upholstery of chairs.  They prefer dark, secluded places.  They often come out to feed on their host just before dawn returning to their harbourage before day breaks.
