Amphipods

DESCRIPTION

Amphipods are small prawn like creatures 5 – 10 mm long and while alive are a blackish brown in colour. They turn pink or a cooked prawn colour when dead.  They are good jumpers and can also crawl.  They are related to other crustaceans.

LIFE CYCLE / HABITAT

Their actual life cycle is unknown; however they occur in moist garden areas, often in decaying vegetable matter where they jump around like fleas.  It is likely rainy weather or prolonged watering of the landscape forces these animals to seek a somewhat drier environment.  They invade the house by jumping or crawling through windows or crawling through doorways.  They then die because of insufficient moisture, their body turns pink.
